Ananda continued, “How can the sense organs cause me to transmigrate in samsara and be happy in absolute nirvana?”

“Bondage and liberation are not two different things.”

Ananda was still unsatisfied. The Buddha looked at him, probably smiled for half a second, then called to the audience.

“I want to ask you, bodhisattvas and arhats who have practice my Dharma, by what method did you enter the state of samadhi?”

Twenty-five rose to give testimonies, ending with Avalokitesvara, who’d used sound to penetrate through. This was determined the most appropriate method by “all the Buddhas in the world,” in a gatha sung by Manjusri under “uncountable rays of light interlaced in precious nets, where showers of green, yellow, red, and white lotus blossoms turned the whole of space into a seven-colored expanse and caused mountains, rivers, and the great earth to disappear…”

…the light was blinding. It seemed to emanate from all points at once. From the ringing void, a sound arose.. I thought at first it was an entity from the Akanistha realm, but no, no… It was Ananda, Ananda as a disembodied voice arising, again. “If the Buddha’s substance were real, how could there be… hells… hungry ghosts… self-existing or… are these hells really somewhere?”

The Buddha’s voice, like the peal and rumble of thunder… it continued for some time… unfortunately the mojo wire began acting strangely, many words lost to its analog circuitry, the chirping wires vibrating in and out of phase, sometimes here, sometimes there. In the moaning silence an eruption of words:

“Destroy the Buddha seed… the excellent roots… the steeling of mind… against the holy current… the annihilation of all things… the taint of desire… generative fluid… the willing sacrifice of even one’s own life… the flow of retributive transformation… king of ghosts… beasts with hair and fur… wind and fire meet… visions of hot iron beds… the illusion of cold… crying out… a sea of pestilential vapor… hills of knives… punishment with fetters, locks, whips, staves, birches, cudgels… shut in a prison van… evil designs… an abyss of perversion… a clap of thunder… secrets being exposed… a secret enemy… walking into the ocean… a raging fire… the spirit follows smoke… boundless dread and silent darkness… black smoke and purple flame… molten iron in scattered sparks that disturbs the whole of space… rising waves that submerge heaven and earth… dead silence… jets of poisonous gas… showers of venomous insects… to swoon and drop to the ground… never ceasing waves… a ripped and decomposed corpse… a great hill of flesh with hundreds and thousands of eyes to see itself being devoured by countless beasts… miasmas and flying stones… iron hail that rains down… the embrace of mountains… the road to hell… knocking, striking, stabbing, shooting… plowing, nipping, beheading, cutting… ceaseless running about… cries, screams, lamentation, weeping… strange ghosts, mostly reborn as owls — creatures through whom the future can be foretold, reborn as writers… those who do not seek the permanent… their luminous bodies contaminated by love… a strong love which drives you mad… the full measure of felicity… the world falsely created… demons as dark vapors… light destroying darkness… the imminent loss of all your precious bodhi… all sorts of apparitions… living beings in the worlds they have deserved… to see distinctly in the dark… reflections in the bright mirror… infinite sadness… infinite joy… laughing without cause… failing to extricate oneself… the profound noumenon to which you conform… devoid of nature… an empty mind implying annihilation… the mind escaping the body like a bird from a cage… the strange ghost becomes a demon… holds a ball of fire… a beautiful girl to seduces you, thereby exhausting your vitality… shadows of coarse sense data… a mirage that disturbs the clear horizon… no interior cause… life ceases to flow…”
